“Animal Spirits with Chinese Characteristics"

Mark DeWeaver will discuss the main conclusions of his new book, Animal Spirits with Chinese Characteristics: Investment Booms and Busts in the World’s Emerging Economic Giant, which shows how Chinese investment cycles result from flaws in the design of state-sector institutions.  The presentation will draw on case studies that illustrate the links between flawed institutional design and local-government-promoted excess investment.  This evidence indicates that China is a lot less "capitalist" than is commonly imagined.
