Port City Brewing Company
"Eonomics of Beer"
Owner Bill Butcher is passionate about producing unique craft beers. His philosophy is to brew beers that are full flavored, with layers of complexity, that are also approachable and well balanced. After graduating from James Madison University, Butcher found himself in the wine business for 18 years, 12 of them with the Mondavi Family. After leaving the wine business to spend time with his own family, he watched the craft beer industry become more like wine- which in part inspired the enthusiasm for creating his own business. In January 2011 Port City Brewery opened its’ doors to become a great quality, locally produced craft beer.
Port City Brewing Co., is the first production brewery to open in the modern era of D.C.-area breweries. Currently located in Alexandria City Virginia the brewery is not only thriving but increasing its footprint and nearly triple its brewing capacity. The 5-year-old brewery, which now brews about 17,000 barrels of beer per year and distributes as far north as New York and as far south as North Carolina, had been eyeing expansion for a couple of years. Now with $500,000 in new grants Port City is also demonstrating how a small business can leverage Federal, State and Local government partnerships to grow.
The National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) is a trade association that represents the interests of more than 2,850 beer distributors throughout the United States before government and the public.
