Department of Commerce

(Serves as Counselor to Secretary Penny Pritzker)

"The Need for Data-Driven Government Solutions"

Mr. Antonipillai will discuss how the Department of Commerce is finding innovative ways to make our data more accurate, usable and accessible fo the private sector.  In particular, Justin will discuss Commerce’s comprehensive strategic plan to improve the timeliness, scope, and quality of our economic data, driven in large part by the focus that Secretary Pritzker has brought to this issue. The goals are to focus on steps that can improve our economic statistics in the short-to-medium term, while also leaving in place a culture of constant improvement and innovation around our core statistics.  He will also examine the Commerce Data Service, a team of data engineers, data scientists and technologists focused on applying user-centered design and agile methodologies to the process of data insight and product creation. In addition, he will discuss recent reports from the Office of the Chief Economist, including a report defining digital matching firms and possible economic effects.

Mr. Antonipillai joined the Commerce Department in 2013 as Deputy General Counsel, and has also served as Acting General Counsel and Acting Chief of Staff to Secretary Pritzker.  Mr. Antonipillai has played a key role in a number of the Department's top priorities, including co-leading the United States negotiating team in reaching agreement on the new E.U.-U.S. Privacy Shield with the European Commission, and on the issues of privacy, cybersecurity and encryption, and a number of other digital economic issues.

Prior to joining the Commerce Department, Mr. Antonipillai was a partner with the international law firm of Arnold & Porter LLP where he focused on the growth of United States-based companies, private equity funds, and accounting firms.
