Acting Assistant Secretary for Financial Markets

Seth Carpenter is acting assistant secretary for financial markets for the Department of the Treasury. He was made acting assistant early this year after being nominated for assistant secretary in 2014. From 2013 to 2014, Carpenter served as the deputy assistant secretary for economic policy at the department. Before that, he served at the board of governors of the Federal Reserve System from 1999 to 2014. Carpenter began his service with the Federal Reserve as a research economist and rose to the rank of deputy director of the Division of Monetary Affairs. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses at Duke University, the College of William & Mary, George Washington University and Johns Hopkins University. He also served on the board of advisors for the Thomas Jefferson Public Policy Program at the College of William & Mary. Carpenter received a B.A. in French and economics from the College of William & Mary and an M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University.
