“ U.S. jobs related to consumer spending from the Great Recession through 2022”
Ms. Barello will discuss the findings of a report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) that estimates the relationship between consumer spending and employment during the Great Recession. Though consumer behavior during and after the recession has been documented in various papers, the relationship between consumption and employment has not yet been quantified in the literature. The report also projects the number and type of U.S. jobs related to consumer spending in 2022 using the latest BLS employment projections.

Stephanie Hugie Barello is responsible for measuring the relationship between consumer spending and U.S. employment in the Employment Projections Program at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). She is also in charge of developing the macroeconomic outlook which forms the basis of the BLS employment projections. A fourth generation Aggie, Stephanie holds degrees in Economics and International Studies from Utah State University (MS, BA), graduating summa cum laude, as a Jon M. Huntsman Scholar, and as Valedictorian. She has previously been involved in state politics and international development.
