Roger Betancourt

University of Maryland, Department of Economics

"Unbundling Democracy:  Tilley Trumps Schumpeter"

Dr. Betancourt will take us back to our political economic roots with an analytical assessment of the dynamics of civil liberties and political rights across countries.  He and Dr. Ariel BenYishay of the University of New South Wales utilize Freedom House data to extend their earlier analysis evaluating the impact of political variables on long-run economic growth (BenYishay and Betancourt 2010).  This work seeks to explore the evolution of these political constructs.

Dr. Betancourt is currently a Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Maryland.  He received a B.A. in Economics from Georgetown University and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.  He has broad interests within economics.  While originally trained as an applied econometrician, his research interests currently lie in the area of applied microeconomics and economic development.  His main consultancies include international organizations as well as business firms.
