Edmund S. Phelps
Columbia University

"Innovatorship and Grassroots Dynamism"

This year’s dinner, to be co-hosted with The Embassy of Canada, will feature the first annual NEC Herbert Stein Memorial Lecture, delivered by Edmund S. Phelps, winner of the 2006 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science. The Stein lecture honors Herb Stein, NEC’s founding President and Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under two U.S. presidents. Stein’s son, economist (also actor / writer / lawyer) Ben Stein will attend and speak in remembrance of his father. Glen Hodgson, SVP and Chief Economist for the Conference Board of Canada, will deliver remarks on the Canadian economy. Schedule permitting, we will have words of welcome from the Canadian Ambassador, Gary Doer.

The evening will begin with cocktails and an outstanding harpist in the Embassy's magnificent rooftop Niagara Room, followed by the banquet in the Canada Room.  And since modern economics began with Adam Smith in Scotland, as you arrive at the Embassy, you will be greeted by a bagpiper.
