Where is the Chinese Economy Headed?

While the mature economies have been plagued by fiscal stress and lackluster growth, policy in China has sought to dampen domestic demand and curb inflation. Rising prospects for a renewed slowdown in global growth have raised concerns that the Chinese economy is headed for a sharp correction in response to a drop off in exports and a bust in the booming property market. China's massive holdings of official foreign exchange reserves and the slow pace of exchange rate appreciation have also rekindled lingering tensions with its major trading partners. The discussion will focus on an assessment of macroeconomic policies in China and examine the near-term outlook for growth in a changing global environment.
