"Japan's Trade Strategy in a New Global Trading Environment"

Protectionist sentiment has been growing in many parts of the world. In the US, Mr. Donald Trump, new President, declared that the US withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), while the UK has decided to exit from the European Union (EU).  TPP has been Japan’s most important trade policy as the TPP is expected to contribute to Japan’s economic recovery and economic growth of the Asia-Pacific region by liberalizing trade and investment policies and setting new economic rules. Japan has to rethink its trade strategy in a new global trading environment.

Professor Urata received his PhD in economics from Stanford University.  He has been a Professor at Waseda University since 1994, teaching in the School of Social Sciences from 1994-2005 and at the Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies since 2005. Previously, Professor Urata was an economist at The World Bank (1981-1986) and a Research Associate at The Brookings Institute (1978-1981). He specializes in International and Developmental Economics.

This event is co-sponsored by the U.S.-Japan Research Institute.
