Economic growth would have been much stronger in the past three quarters if not for a steep decline in nonresidential and multifamily construction. Will the sector continue to retard growth or will it finally provide some stimulus? Meanwhile, the industry was hit by sharp materials cost increases again this spring despite sluggish demand. Will prices continue rising, and will the contagion spread to consumers? Ken Simonson, economist for the industry’s leading trade association, will discuss the connections between construction, materials costs and the broader economy, and provide his fearless forecasts.
